i try and rotate through a healthy mix of of topics and tag the main things consistently. mostly it’s insects (#entomology), blorbos from my gay pirate show (#ofmd) and autism (#actually autistic) content. some writing/poetry, other animals, general academia & science rants, and silly memes may pop up too.

let me know if you need anything else tagged. DMs are open.

... that post about Izzy keeping his distance in part because he's sure he's going to have to kill them and Jack calling him sentimental AND Ed's rule about killing pets because love makes men weak are currently making my brain buzz... what was it LIKE on Blackbeard's crew?? I want to know their backstory so bad!

I’m thinking about this excellent post by @itsclydebitches about what Blackbeard may have been like and another meta that I can’t find right now about how we’ve already been told how dark Edward can be but we’ve laughed it off as not serious because Edward is also so wounded and sweet and babygirl - that we might be shocked by the Kraken in S2, but we won’t be able to say we weren’t warned.

I hope we get flashbacks so we can see what it was like, and how much of it is new after Stede and Izzy and “Eddie, Eddie give us another song”.

The moment I keep returning to is Fang’s fear when Lucius is sketching him and he thinks Blackbeard is back. Fang who cries over his dog and smiles sweetly and flirts with Lucius but who is also a proper pirate who doesn’t flinch or hesitate when Ed orders the snail fork flaying, who kills and carries out raids and is fearsome in his own right - he’s scared of Ed seeing him being sketched. When he finds out it’s just Izzy he relaxes completely and makes no move to end the sketching session. He doesn’t care if Izzy sees because Izzy isn’t a threat to him, Izzy isn’t going to hurt him, Izzy, it seems, isn’t even going to tell on him. But Ed? Fang does not want to get on his bad side.

I don’t think Edward is a monster, or an abuser. I also don’t think he’s been secretly trying to be soft for 20 or 30 years while Izzy slaps his hand away and continuously forces him into a role he wants no part of and was never happy with.

Edward is Blackbeard as much as he is Ed, and we have no reason to believe he didn’t set the tone for his own ship. A tone that is far lighter than the monstrous time they had on Hornigold’s ship, but also far darker than the Revenge.

Totally meant to reblog this days ago nbd

but YEAH all of this. Honestly, I like babygirl-ing a character as much as the next fan, but some people might be in for a shock if S2 even gestures towards the direction I’m expecting and they’ve forgotten that yeah, we were very much warned about this side of Ed in advance. It’s not even in the realm of subtle. That Fang scene is a fantastic example and I think it’s additionally significant that Izzy has been violent towards Fang before this, yet Fang still isn’t scared of him. Izzy is the one who pulls Fang’s beard and who is seen smacking Pete upside the head whenever he gets the chance, but when push comes to shove, it’s not Izzy who Fang is worried about seeing him… what, exactly? Slacking off? Being physically and emotionally vulnerable? Indulging in something too ‘soft’ for piracy? Letting Lucius off the hook and undermining the First Mate’s order? It’s not clear what exactly he thinks Ed will take issue with, but the point is that he’s horrified at the thought of Ed discovering them vs. being totally relaxed as Izzy yells, “What the FUCK?” Despite Izzy being the only one of the two who, technically speaking, has laid a hand on him and other members of the crew.

But that’s because Izzy is primarily bluster and whatever violence he does enact is either a) incredibly tame by a pirate’s standards, or b) severely limited by what he sees as universal rules. His duel with Stede falls under the latter category, him pulling Fang’s beard the former. Sure, we as the audience respond viscerally to that harm because we (hopefully) live in a culture where co-workers don’t manhandle each other in such a manner, but for a pirate it’s on the EXTREMELY chill end of what they might deal with AND it never varies. Izzy is predictable, which is why Fang doesn’t panic. The most Izzy will do is give another slap or a pull and otherwise yell a lot. Ed though? Ed is the wild card. Ed calmly orders a man skinned and drowned (by Fang) because that man insulted him. Ed goes from softly instructing Stede to screaming about putting his knife through a man’s eye. Ed has a heart-to-heart with Lucius in the morning and is throwing him overboard that night. Izzy is an asshole, but he’s a safe asshole because you know what to expect from him, the flip-side of which is that when he’s not yelling or pulling beards, he’s doing what he can to keep the crew alive and functioning well. He’s predictable both in regards to his asshole-ness and his loyalty.

Sleep Stats: Autism

  • Nearly 80% of Autistic children age 2 to 5 have sleep problems (Reynolds et al., 2019).
  • Autistic people tend to get less REM sleep. On average, we spend about 15% of our sleep in REM sleep (Allistics, on average, spend 25% in REM sleep). This means we need MORE sleep to get the same amount of REM as the average person (Buckley et al., 2010; Neumeyer et al., 2019).
  • Autistic people are more likely to experience insomnia, which includes everything from difficulty falling asleep to night waking and early morning rising (Furfaro, 2020).
  • Autistic people are more likely to have gene mutations that impact melatonin regulation & circadian rhythms (Furfaro, 2020).
